Retardation Day Support Services

In
1976, RACSB worked with concerned citizens to form the
private, non-profit agency, Rappahannock Adult Activities,
Inc. (RAAI), which operated out of the old Little Falls
School Building on Kings Highway. RAAI is a community-based
developmental day program that promotes dignity, independence,
individualization, inclusion, and productivity of people
with mental retardation in their community. |

RAAI
works with individuals and their families to identify
and develop personal goals through an array of opportunities
and choices. These include self-advocacy; recreation,
social and leisure skill development; functional academics;
career awareness and exploration; employment; assistive
technology; supported retirement, and volunteerism.

RAAI
began its horticulture training program in the vacant
greenhouses at Chatham Manor, though a partnership with
the National Parks Service.
Today, The Activities Center has its own greenhouse and
discovery center onsite where horticulture therapy is
provided to participants. Each spring, the community supports their annual fundraising efforts by attending their Mayfest celebration and by purchasing plants. |

| Employment
opportunities are contracted through several
private providers, including Rappahannock Goodwill Industries
(RGI), Choice, and RSVP, where individuals work with counselors
to develop personalized plans to maximize growth in a
variety of work settings and businesses. |

| RAAI is an agency of Rappahannock Area Community Services Board and receives support from Rappahannock United Way. |
